The George Hotel is a striking, idyllic 15th Century coaching inn, with oak beams and inglenook fireplaces throughout. Set in two acres of beautiful grounds and built in 1495 it is one of the oldest coaching inns in the country.

The George Hotel is a fifteenth century coaching inn set in the heart of Oxfordshire. In the days of the stagecoach it provided a welcome haven for many an aristocrat inlcuding the first Duchess of Marlborough, Sarah Churchill. However, in more recent times we have seen famous guests of a different hue such as author DH Lawrence. We have also been featured on "Midsummer Murders - the house in the Woods" and more recently had a visit from the Belgian Sleuth himself Poirot.

The Buildings of The George Hotel have changed little since their heyday as a coaching inn. It retains all the beauty and charm of those days whilst offering every modern amenity.

The Hotel provides 17 en-suite bedrooms set in peaceful surroundings; all individually decorated and furnished with fine antiques. Our owners have created a décor which suits the requirements of modern times and facilities whilst maintaining the spirit of the past.

Our versatile, beautifully manicured gardens create the perfect setting for that quiet drink, the perfect marquee wedding reception, a great meeting place for family and friends and a safe, secure environment for our younger guests to explore.

Dorchester-on-Thames itself, is a small village dating back to the 11th Century. Prehistoric man, Bronze Age and Iron Age, Romans, Saxons and Normans have all have left their traces of dwellings and culture. The village is central to many major centres of commerce and historic sites in southern England. It is directly opposite the famous Dorchester - on - Thames Abbey.

Hotel Reviews

I stayed at the George Hotel in Dorchester this weekend and I think I have been lucky enough to experience some paranormal activity...which may be confirmed by the fact that I have videoed about 10 orbs in my bedroom and I didn't even realise until I played the video back last night for the first time! Therefore, would love to go back to The George if you will be arranging a special weekend there!

I Stayed last Friday night(June 30)in Room 8 where myself and my wife-to-be took some photos of the room. We have one photo with 3 clear orbs showing, possibly more as I haven't studied it closely yet. It was also very hot in the roo - a fact the maid made a point of telling us - which is strange as it doesn't get direct sunlight...

Myself & My Family moved into the George Hotel on 4th Dec 2006 as the New Managers. We stayed in Room 11, one of the outside rooms on the balcony. It was the first night of our stay in this room. I woke up at about 4am as i could see the clock radio. I was unable to move any part of my body apart from my eyes and i could see a circle of what looked like smoke in front of the door, it did not make me feel scared until i tried to move to wake up my husband but then i went back to sleep. Two weeks ago in Room 3 my sister and her husband who had not been told of my experience, experienced the same in being held down on the bed at different times in the night once with the lights on, and the other interesting thing is they had the bedroom windows open all night and did not once in the night hear the Abbey clock bells which are un missable and ring every quater of the hour...
